TITLE

MAY BAGYO MA’T RILIM (May Bagyo man at Dilim) is a title of a Poem using the Abecedario Filipino, this is based from Spanish Alphabet or Latin Script. Abecedario had either 28, 29, 31 or 32 letters. Prior to Spanish colonization, a native writing systems called Baybayin were utilized by some communities in Luzon and Visayas. Baybayin and Spanish alphabet were evidently shown on Doctrina Christiana, a book that outlines the basic teachings and prayers of Christianity translated in Tagalog.  The tagalog term Bagyo is a “typhoon” in English while rilim for “darkness.”

AUTHOR AND DATE

The author of the poem did not identify himself but certainly a Tagalog.Tagalog are the native Filipinos in spanish times. The verses was included in the book “Memorial de la Vida Cristiana en Lengua Tagala”(Guidelines for the Christian Life in the Tagalog Language) published in 1605.

BACKGROUND AND SETTING

The poem is situated in the Philippine Archipelago affected by cyclonic storms and flood. According to Time magazine, “the Philippines is the most storm-exposed country on earth” facing an average of eight or nine tropical storms landfall every year. The worst typhoon occured in 2013. Typhoon “Yolanda” damage costs Php 95.5 billion. The deadliest “Haiphong” typhoon killed 20,000 people on September 1881.  In the 19th century, The Philippine Weather Bureau and Jesuits pioneering meteorology discovered two (2) typhoons: wind and wind typhoons. Rain typhoon took a landfall from April to August while wind typhoons struck from October to December.

The poem has 7 syllables(pantig) each verse(taludtud). Each verse ends with consonant(katinig) rhyme(tugma).

HISTORICAL/THEMATIC ANALYSIS

SECTION: THE EXISTENCE OF TYPHOON

Verse 1 May bagyo ma’t, may rilim

 (May bagyo man at dilim)

(There is a storm and darkness)

There are seven (7) syllables on the first verse May /bag/yo /ma’t/, may/ ri/lim. The poet presents the regular typhoons that regularly hammering the Philippines each year. The concept of darkness in the Philippines is associated with something scary. Indeed, the devastating effect of storm is dreadful. Typhoon could be a symbol for unplanned adversities of life like COVID-19.

Verse 2 Ang ola’y, titiguisin,

(Ang ulan ay bumubuhos)

(The rain is pouring down)The poet presents rainfall amidst tropical storm. Verse 1 & 2 have the last words: “rilim” and “titiguisin”. Both words end with consonant letter m and n called consonant rhyme (Katinig tugma). SECTION 2: THE SEARCH FOR GOD

Verse 3 Aco’y, magpipilit din:

(Ako’y magpipilit din)

(I will force myself)

Typhoon could be a symbol for unplanned adversities of life. Our common reaction could be expressed in the song, “Stay with Me”:

“Should my heart not be humble, should my eyes fail to see,
Should my feet sometimes stumble on the way, stay with me.
Like a lamb that in springtime wanders far from the fold,
Come the darkness and the frost, I get lost, I grow cold

I grow cold, I grow weary and I know I have sinned.
And I go seeking shelter and I cry in the wind.”

Let us take a look at the characteristics of a lamb. A sheep had a reputation of being “stupid, defenseless and harmless.” But the truth is: lambs are surprisingly intelligent with their marvelous memory aptitude. They are just meek amd humble  but  “build friendships, stick up for one another in fights, and feel sad when their friends are sent to slaughter.” Being meek means know when to show strength.

Amidst typhoon (Bagyo), no matter how rain poured out and cold the weather, a breadwinner in the family need to secure the house and store food whether he feel it or not. This is an act of love of the father. No one judge him for caring under compulsion (napipilitan) under this circumstances. “Pilit” in this context means doing the right thing whether you feel it or not. Mind over emotions. In relationship to God, he wants us to take refuge in Him. But he wants us to put faith into action whether we feel it or not.  God gave us strength and wisdom. He did not create us just to take a rest and said, “Bahala na.” God did not stop creating or working after the sixth day. He continues to support everything that exists-visible and invisible. However, sometimes we have distorted ongoing creation with “Bahala na” attitude. We placed so much hope on God’s providence that we have forgotten our responsibility to exert effort. God is calling us to do good works in love.  There are acts of righteousness for a “show” due to lack of knowledge of God and shallow faith.

4 Acquing paglalacbayin

Aking lalakbayin

(I will journey)

The poet presents spirituality as a journey or process. Part of reflection is to ponder: Why does God allow typhoons and kill thousands of people? Why bad things happen to good people? Natural disaster such as typhoons, climate change, tsunamis, earthquakes, Sars Cov-2, etcetera was caused by earth or biological movements. Let us take a look at Corona Virus. COVID-19 was caused by a natural process, transmitting from bats to humans through an intermediate host. Nature does not have the ability to recognize disasters or catastrophes. If a glass falls from the table and got broken, do you get angry? No. You just adjust and accept because of the law of gravity (Breboneria, 2020).

Albert Camus suggested, “that the question of theodicy could be reimagined from the notion of the absurdity of life”.  Illness, poverty, affliction, and suffering have no metaphysical origin and are experienced existentially and randomly. The question is not “who” but “why.” “Why” is an open ended-question that “gives voice ‘through a humble use of reason’ to an existential crisis in the face of an enormous situation.” Why do bad things to good people? New Testament Scholar NT Wright stated, “Lament is what happens when people ask ‘Why?’ and don’t get an answer”(Bentley, 2020).

The adversities of Biblical Job shall not be interpreted as a judgment from God or redemptive action. He has done nothing to deserve the physical pain and horrible disease. He had mourned for his misery and protested to God. He had seen how the wicked prosper. In spite of personal disasters and unanswered queries, he realized, “the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil, that is understanding” (Job 28:28).

God created humans with the possibility to do evil because of free will. Humans chose to do evil, as a result, suffering, and death in this world. Without free will, humans won’t exist. But sin is not always the cause of adversities. The Lord is fully aware of our difficulties. He knows where we are coming from. He responded to suffering through Incarnation—He immersed himself in it until he died. He asked the Father, “Why have you forsaken me?” Despite pain and sorrow, he submitted to God’s will. He was humble and silent. Real faith, love, and perseverance can only be tested if we are facing a crisis and handling unlovable people around us. Of course, we do not plan for hardship. God is neither sadist nor masochist. The death of Christ was the consequence of the Lord’s choice to live in this sinful world. But God can turn bad things into good. Catholic Philosophy expert and author Dr. Peter Kreeft of Boston College stated, “The death of God himself on the cross. At the time, nobody saw how anything good could ever result from this tragedy. And yet God foresaw that the result would be the opening of heaven to human beings. So the worst tragedy in history brought about the most glorious event in history. And if it happened there-if the ultimate evil can result in the ultimate good-it can happen elsewhere, even in our own individual lives. Here, God lifts the curtain and lets us see it. Elsewhere he simply says, ‘Trust me’”(Breboneria, 2020)

Lamentation is not enough. Thomas Oord (2019), the author of the book entitled “theodicy, God, can’t: How to believe in God and love after the tragedy, abuse, and other evils” argues “that whilst Christians lament, we should also try to identify what God is doing in response to suffering. God’s response is love… Christ is the revelation of God’s selfless, participatory love, but also calls His followers to participate with God in creation in works of compassion, love, and care. These are practical expressions of God’s work in creation, which is not divorced from science, knowledge or human participation, but in which all of these are infused(Bentley, 2020)”.

5 Toloyin cong hanapin

(Tuloy kung hanapin)

(I will search)

One practical and immediate way of dealing with Typhoon like Super Typhoon Goni is to pray. God always answers our prayer according to His ways leading to perfect wisdom and love. In case of emergency amd uncontrollable circumstances, God wants us to take action. In Matthew 7:7-11, Jesus said, ““Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Prayer is asking God to grant our prayer requests but not expecting immediate “Yes” for an answer.  It is hoping in God’s sovereignty that He knows what is best for us.

At 9 pm, Easter Vigil begins in St. Peter’s Basilica last April 11,2020. After the blessing of the fire behind the Altar of the Confession and the processional entrance with the lights of the Basilica instead of the lighting candles accompanied the three “Lumen Christi” invocations, the Pope presided the Liturgy of the Word and Celebrations of the Eucharist. No baptisms were performed during the liturgy. To announce the Resurrection, the bells of the Basilica rang at the moment of the “Gloria.”(Vatican News, 2020).Pope Francis presided a Vigil Mass and preached a riveting message of hope to humanity in an empty St Peter’s Basilica under a terrifying coronavirus outbreak where two-thirds of the world’s population was under quarantine or restrictions. Pope Francis told shared his global audience the implication of the resurrection of Jesus, “tonight we acquire a fundamental right that can never be taken away from us: the right to hope.”(America Magazine, 2020). A theological error and ethically hazardous that some scholars claim is the certainty of Christian hope… To say “I hope” already acknowledges that one may not get what one wants… understanding hope as a disciplined persistence (rather than an affect or conviction) enables hope to continue even when satisfaction is unforeseeable (Alimi et al, 2020).

(God, our Father)

In pre-colonial Philippines, animism or the belief that every  force of nature has its own gods or spirits were evident. “Dios na Ama Namin” settles the relationship with one God. “Ama Namin” is a prayer in Doctrina Christiana but originally taken out from the New Testament.  “Ama Namin” is a prayer in the Gospel uttered by Jesus Christ to teach disciples how to pray. The Lord’s prayer(Matthew 6:9) recognizes the supremacy of God that deserves to be praised and worship, and our needs of God’s providence, protection, and love to sustain our lives.

Calling God Father settles our relationship in this world and its hard law. For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is mercy, compassion, forgiveness and eternal life for those who authentically believe, try, and act. Faith without action is dead.

The Lord’s prayer use the word “Namin”(our), not “my”, “me,” and “mine” to signifies relationship with others. Jesus said, “Love others as you love yourself.”

Faith is equal to sampalataya. There are 2 significant root words on this tagalong terms: “sampa” and “taya.” For certain times, you had tried hanging at the back of the jeepney. You need to “sampa”(climb) all of your body, not just a part of the body or else got dragged and injured. When you “sampa” to God, you need to hope and follow His plan to ensure better future. “Taya”is taking a risk. You’ll understand this if you had played lotto and ending. You cannot see God but you have “taya” and trust. This sampalataya is expressed in the song:

“Though I grope and I blunder, and I’m weak and I’m wrong,
Though the road buckles under where I walk, walk alone.
Till I find to my wonder, every path leads to Thee.
All that I can do is pray, ‘Stay with me. Stay with me’.”

Jeremiah 29:11- “11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Mayroong dalawang(2) makabuluhang salita: “sampa” at “taya.”
